Whether you’re preparing to begin a job hunt or are currently in the throws of applications and interviews, it’s important to keep yourself in a healthy mindset throughout the journey. Of course, immersing ourselves in scripture, regularly talking with God in prayer, and finding empathy and loving support from family and friends are essential lifelines during transitions.
In addition to those practices, it’s wise to seek out perspective and insight from others who can speak wisely into our job journey and help us learn and reflect on the process. While we may have wise counselors we can connect with in person, there are a number of great authors who can act as mentors and wisdom-givers through their books.
Below are five books that I believe are worth picking up during the exciting and challenging process of job hunting.
Discernment by Henri Nouwen
A compilation of writings, teachings and journals by Nouwen, Discernment reminds us of the simple, yet essential habits of listening for God’s voice as we faithfully discern what we are to do with our life.
Let Your Life Speak by Parker Palmer
Focused on unpacking the idea of “vocation,” Palmer shares thoughtful wisdom on this often elusive concept. His contemplative, Quaker background brings a calming perspective to the often confusing and chaotic quest for our calling.
Life Younique by Will Mancini
Full of practical tools and thoughtful questions, Mancini leads us on a journey of strategic self-exploration. His ministry background and pastoral heart shine through as he encourages us to identify and name our unique God-given wiring.
The Pastor by Eugene Peterson
Though everyone’s journey is different, there’s no doubt that job searching is often catalyzed by church wounds, emotional burnout or diminishing passion for our pastoral post. Peterson’s ministry memoir disarmingly reminds us of what it means at its core to be a pastor to people.
What Color Is Your Parachute by Richard Bolles
A longstanding classic book for job seekers, Bolles shares a variety of practical assessments, helpful tips and insightful wisdom for those transitioning between jobs or exploring career changes.
